Ground Segment
The objective of the Ground Segment is to deliver quality of service to the end users of Thuraya System with the adaptation of the latest GSM and Satellite technologies and with building new concepts of services benefiting from the integration of GSM infrastructure, GPS services, and the Satellite expanded coverage under one network.
The Ground Segment Department is under Technical Services Division and has the overall responsibility of the operation, maintenance, planning and development of Thuraya Ground Segment which consist of the following:
Gateway Station Subsystem (GS)
Provides real time connectivity and control between Ground Communication Network and the User Terminal via Satellite.
Advanced Operation Center ( AOC)
- provides centralised control of the network resources and allocates those recourses to the gateways.
- provides centralized network management.
- performs overall system power management.
Network Switching Subsystem, O&M System ( NSS/ OMC-S)
- Provides the interface with the terrestrial telephony network.
- Handles call processing functions and subscriber mobility management.
- Generates call detail records and transfers them to the Billing System.
- OMC -S Provides centralized Operation & Maintenance control of the telephony network.
Software Center (Test Bed)
- Provides Software/functionality testing in a non operating environment
- Used for future Software trails.
Customer Care & Billing System (Supplied by LHS )
- Provides Service Providers with service provisioning capability through point of sales.
- Provides rating and processing of call data records for billing, invoicing, and further settlements with roaming partners.
Intelligent Network System (IN)
- Provides Value Added Services with a very high level of customization and flexibility to add new services by Thuraya.
Short Message Service Center & Voice Mail System (SMS/VMS)
- Provides standard Short Message and voice mail services including Fax and Internet inter-working.
The Ground Segment plays a leading role in the planning and development of new system projects and services in conjunction with other department as driven by Thuraya Business Development.
