Thuraya - A Rescue Hero

Chandigarh, India: Indian Air Force crew rescued Ruth Norfolk, the wife of a senior Canadian diplomat, who fell into a deep snowbound crevasse near Dharamsala. Ruth was airlifted to Chandimandir on May 16 and admitted to the Command Hospital with skull injuries.

Not many would know that the Norfolks were carrying a Thuraya satellite phone with them while trekking at heights of over 15,000 feet. Ruth’s husband Adrian was in constant touch with the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi and kept them posted on how the rescue was shaping up.

The Canadian high commissioner Lucie Edwards said, “I was in touch with the Norfolks over the phone through their ordeal. The Indian Air Force pilots did a really commendable job. This rescue could really serve as an inspiration for a film-maker.”
