Thuraya and Mark Evans to Kayak along the coastline of Oman…

31st October 2004

Adventurer Mark Evans will become the first person to kayak along the coastline of Oman when he embarks on his sea-expedition two months later. Evans will be carrying a Thuraya satellite telephone to be in touch with BBC WorldService and BBC Radio 5 who will be doing interviews with him, whilst he is paddling.

Mark, who was recognised by Britain last year for involving young people on challenging educational ventures, will launch his 17ft kayak into the waters off Musandam, a fjord like area in Oman on December 16, this year, as part of the Around Oman expedition. Several months, and 1,700km later, he will reach the border with Yemen, becoming the first person to kayak the coastline of Oman.

The use of Thuraya satellite technology for the adventurer and his support team means that they are able to communicate with each other in the remotest of locations. Additionally, thanks to Thuraya satellite telephony people will be able to contact Mark and the vehicle support team by using the ‘contact the team’ section of their website http://www.aroundoman.com/

The journey will be undertaken in two or three stages between December 2004 and 2005, and will end in the south of the country, between Salalah and the border with Yemen.

The kayak is a totally silent and non-polluting method of sea travel, and can carry tents, gas, water and three weeks worth of provisions in watertight hatches. Evans first paddled a kayak at the age of 8, and more recent kayak expeditions include paddling with Killer Whales off the coast of British Columbia, and four weeks dodging polar bears in the ice strewn waters off Northern Svalbard.
