Thuraya Rural Telephony products connects remote and rural areas in Libya

Tripoli, 29th May 2007- In a concerted campaign focusing on growing business in core African and Middle Eastern markets, Thuraya has jointly launched this week a project for operating 3000 Public Calling Office (PCO) and Payphone units in the Great Jamahiriya of Libya with its Libyan Service Provider General Post & Telecommunications Company (GPTC).

Talking to a press conference at the opening of the Third Annual Fair for Communications and Information Technologies in Tripoli, His Excellency Dr. Eng. Mohammed Muammar al-Gathafi, Secretary of the Administration Committee of the General Communications Corporation, and Thuraya’s CEO Mr. Yousuf Al Sayed, stressed the strategic partnership between Thuraya and GPTC as an exclusive Service Provider and distributor for Thuraya’s products and services in the Great Jamahiriya.

Thuraya and GPTC commissioned a partnership project in 2006 to install a total of 3000 Thuraya PCO and Payphones units, of which 1900 units were for remote and rural areas throughout Libya, and the remaining quantity was for individual corporate and commercial companies operating in areas currently not served by the country’s terrestrial telecom networks.

His Excellency Dr. Al-Gathafi praised Thuraya’s advanced and competitive satellite products which help keep rural areas, companies and various economical operations in outpost locations connected to the rest of the world.

Thuraya, which is participating in this event for the third consecutive year, is witnessing a great interest from the exhibition visitors and business representatives in Libya.

“Libya is a key market for Thuraya and one that is seeing a huge growth potential. We will work closely with our partner GPTC to meet the increasing demands on our services from several sectors,” said Thuraya’s CEO.

There are currently more than 5000 Thuraya handheld subscribers in Libya, with this number expected to double by the end of the year as the new stocks of SO-2510 and SG-2520 purchased by GPTC recently are rolled out over the coming months.

The fair, running from 27 to 31 May, has attracted around 70 companies from the Arab, African, European and Asian markets.
