Thuraya names Chief Executive
May 1998
Thuraya’s Board of Directors has approved the appointment of Mr. Yousuf Al Sayed as Chief Executive of Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications Company.
Al Sayed, a UAE national, joins Thuraya from the Emirates Telecommunications Corporation (Etisalat). In the last ten years he has held several senior positions within Etisalat, including Chief Engineer Transmission, Chief Engineer Satellite Network and Thuraya Project Manager.
Al Sayed’s involvement with Thuraya began in 1995 when he was appointed member of the project team. In 1997, he was appointed Manager Thuraya Project. Since joining the project, Al Sayed has been extensively involved in leading the negotiations with major satellite manufacturers. His responsibilities included overseeing project contracting and other key technical and regulatory issues related to the project.
Al Sayed has also been involved in key assignments on a national level, including heading the UAE delegation at the World Radio Conference (WRC) in both 1995 and 1997. He was also in charge of UAE Transmission Networking in 1993 and 1994.
"Telecommunications has always been about change and innovations to continually open up new possibilities in the way people communicate," said Al Sayed. "The Thuraya Project provides tremendous opportunities for both national service providers and telecommunications customers in the region, to further enhance their communications capabilities as they enter the new millennium.
" As a leading regional Mobile Satellite System ( MSS) company, our business vision will be focussed on complementing existing telecommunications services in the areas covered by our satellite system".
He believes that the telecommunications needs of both national service providers and people living within Thuraya’s coverage area will be the most important factors dictating the company’s strategy as provider of world-class satellite telecommunications services.
