Thuraya Offers Reduced Calls in Ramadan to Subscribers in Iraq

Dubai , UAE, October 21, 2003

Thuraya has announced that it will extend special discounted rates to all its subscribers in Iraq during the holy month of Ramadan.

A discount of up to 20 percent will be introduced during Ramadan. All calls originating in Iraq to any landline or mobile network will be discounted by 20 percent, while all Thuraya to Thuraya calls originating in Iraq will be reduced by 13 percent. The new rates will be effective for a period of one month from the start of Ramadan, beginning 12 midnight and ending 10 am daily.

“These discounts are a gesture of goodwill and appreciation to our valued customers in Iraq,” said Thuraya Chairman Mohammad Omran. “We want to send the message that Thuraya is totally committed to providing quality and reliable telecommunications services to Iraq. We pledge to support in the reconstruction efforts, and will strive to introduce new services and products that will enhance the telecommunications infrastructure.”

Thuraya has played an important role in the provision of satellite telecommunications to Iraq after the war. Following the damage to the country’s telecommunications infrastructure, Thuraya emerged as the most popular and dependable telecom choice for civilians, non-government organisations, the media, and government agencies.

“Our subscribers in Iraq are very important to us because of their high usage patterns. For many people Thuraya remains the telecommunications option of choice, and this means that Thuraya has to work harder to meet exceptional needs and rising expectations,” said Mr Omran.

Apart from handheld terminals, rural payphones and public offices are being introduced to Iraq to serve entire communities that are too far to be cost- effectively linked to landline and GSM networks.

“We have found that our payphone rates are extremely competitive and are ideal to link up any size of village or town, immediately and completely. Our public calling offices are being used as instantaneous phone booths set up in all types of public and commercial outlets,” said Mr. Omran.

Another Thuraya product that has brought great value to Iraq is the Thuraya “T-AIR” or indoor satellite repeater. The unit is affixed on any building including hotels and public establishments thereby making possible all Thuraya handset calls indoors on satellite mode.
