Thuraya Starts Commercial Services in Kenya

Abu Dhabi, Nairobi, May 20, 2004

Thuraya and Telemedia Kenya jointly announce the official launch of Thuraya services in Kenya.

Following the inauguration of Telemedia Kenya’s new offices in Nairobi, an official ceremony marking the official launch of Thuraya Services was held under the patronage of Mr. Yousuf Al Sayed, Chief Executive of Thuraya and Mr. Wellington Omodho, Chairman of Telemedia Kenya. Also present were senior dignitaries from the public and private sectors of Kenya.

Speaking on this occasion, Thuraya’s Chief Executive Mr. Yousuf Al Sayed said: "We are pleased to be present at this special ceremony. Kenya is an African economic powerhouse, with tremendous developmental potential. Our hope at Thuraya is to fulfill a promise to provide our Kenyan customers with high quality satellite telecommunications at an affordable cost."

For instance, Thuraya’s PCO can be used in villages, tourists sites and industrial outposts, while our fixed docking unit adapts the handset for indoor usage and our maritime solution can be used on boats and fishing vessels. Thuraya’s commitment is to provide reliable and flexible solutions, and through our service provider offer quality customer service."

On his part, Mr. Wellington Omodho, Chairman of Telemedia’s Kenya said: "We are happy that all arrangements have been finalized to introduce Thuraya’s services in Kenya. Thuraya will expand the reach of national telecommunications networks in the country, providing communications solutions for areas that are currently not served by existing terrestrial telecommunications networks. We are confident that the affordability of Thuraya’s products is one of the service attractions."

Mr. Omodho added: "We believe that Thuraya will play a key role in Kenya, improving access and offering border to border telecommunications. Thuraya’s services will provide ideal and cost-effective communication solutions to subscribers roaming beyond the coverage area of our national mobile network."
