Thuraya's Chairman Speaks at Arabcom

Thuraya’s Chairman Mr Mohammed Hassan Omran reaffirmed Thuraya’s progress towards the launch of its satellite in the fourth quarter of 2000. Mr Omran gave a keynote presentation at The 3rd Annual Arab International Telecom Congress and Exhibition for the Arab States and the Middle East (Arabcom 2000), in Beirut, Lebanon on March 25.

"Thuraya has achieved full capitalization of its project, and has established a strong network of Service Providers in the region," said Mr Omran. In his presentation M rOmran explained the Thuraya system, the product and service components, as well as the characteristics that differentiate Thuraya from other mobile satellite systems.

Mr Omran explained that Thuraya’s system integrates GSM technology, a technological benefit that forms the basis for its business philosophy of partnering with GSM operators within its coverage area and all around the world.

He said that another unique feature of Thuraya’s system is its integration of Global Positioning System. Together the three technologies combine to offer a powerful communications tool at a highly competitive cost, all in a single handheld terminal.

"Thuraya will be offering its customers a choice of two mobile handsets that are similar in shape and size to the GSM sets" he said.
