Thuraya DSL
Q: What is Thuraya DSL?

A: Thuraya DSL satellite IP modem offers you reliable, high-speed GPRS packet data communications anywhere within Thuraya’s coverage area. A compact and user-friendly satellite IP modem, Thuraya DSL provides speeds of up to 144 kbps on a shared channel.

Q: What are the main applications of Thuraya DSL?

A: In areas under-served by fixed line or GSM communications, Thuraya DSL enables you to access email and web mail, login to your corporate intranet or browse the web. You can also use it for E-commerce applications, transferring files via FTP and accessing a Virtual Private Network.

Q: What hardware do I need to use Thuraya DSL?

A: You will require the Thuraya DSL satellite IP Modem, a Thuraya DSL SIM card and a connection to a PC or laptop via an Ethernet connection.

Q: Where are the Thuraya DSL terminals made?

A: Thuraya DSL terminals are manufactured by Hughes Network Systems, Inc., USA.

Q: What does the Thuraya DSL Package contain?

A: The Thuraya DSL package includes the Thuraya DSL satellite IP modem, AC Mains power adapter and cable and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack.

Also included are an Ethernet cable, User Manual, tie-down clips, battery, SIM card holder and travel charger.

Q: Do I have to install any software on my PC before connecting Thuraya DSL?

A: Thuraya DSL is a plug-and-play device. The browser on your PC should support Java. (The Java plug-in required on your PC for terminal control is located at www.java.com)

Q: What are the supported Operating Systems?

A: Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98 second edition, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows XP, and Macintosh OS X v 10.1 or later.

Q: What are the supported web browsers?

A: Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or later, Netscape Communicator 7 or later, Macintosh Safari 1.0 or later, Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or later.

Q: What are the basic steps required to run Thuraya DSL?

A: Insert your SIM card, power on and obtain a GPS fix. Connect to your PC/laptop using the Ethernet cable, point to a Thuraya satellite then exit pointing mode. Once these steps are completed, you are ready to access the internet using Thuraya DSL.

Q: What should I do to obtain a GPS fix?

A: Place the Thuraya DSL outside on a flat surface with a clear view of the sky and press the power button. For optimum GPS signal reception, make sure Thuraya DSL is positioned in a roughly horizontal position with the lid closed.

Since GPS receivers must ‘see’ a large part of the sky without obstructions from buildings, mountains or trees, it may be necessary to take your Thuraya DSL out to a clear space to obtain a new GPS location.

Thuraya DSL will now attempt to locate itself using GPS. This may take up to five minutes.

The most recent GPS location is stored in Thuraya DSL even when powered down. Upon power up, if this stored GPS location is available the display indicates ‘Using Stored Location.’ Even so, Thuraya DSL will attempt to update this GPS location since the Thuraya system will only allow access if your GPS location is not too old.

If Thuraya DSL is able to update the GPS location, the status changes from ‘Stored’ to ‘Valid’. GPS location is shown as ‘Invalid’ only under special circumstances when the stored information has been erased.

Q: Obtaining a GPS fix is taking a long time. What should I do?

A: Switch the terminal off, wait 30 seconds before switching back on and then retry.

Q: What type of Ethernet cable can be used?

A: Any CAT 5 Ethernet cable (less than 100 meters long) can be used to connect the Thuraya DSL terminal to a PC/laptop.

Q: How should I position the terminal?

A: Careful orientation of the terminal towards the satellite is required for establishing a connection. The more precise the alignment, the faster the connection. See your User Manual for details on pointing the terminal.

Q: What is Antenna Pointing Mode?

A: In the Pointing Mode, information regarding pointing of the terminal to the satellite can be viewed on the MMI and the terminal can be adjusted accordingly to get the best signal quality. You must Exit Pointing Mode either through the user interface (MMI) or by pressing the Exit Pointing Button on the terminal.

Q: Do I have to view the pointing screen each time I power up, even though I am using it in the same location?

A: No, you can disable Pointing if this is the case.

Q: Can I change the SIM card with terminal powered on?

A: No, the terminal must be turned off before replacing the SIM card.

Q: Where is the SIM card located?

A: The SIM card is placed in a small compartment adjacent to the battery.

Q: How can I remove the battery and open the SIM card holder?

A: Turn off the terminal. To remove the battery, find the sliding latch on the bottom left of the unit - it has a slightly rough edge. Slide this latch toward the hinge on the antenna. Then tilt the terminal so that the battery slides out – don’t let it drop to the floor. The SIM card holder can then be removed.

Please note: After reinserting the SIM card holder, insert the battery. Make sure that the battery latch is in its furthest right hand position after inserting the battery.

Q: How can I access the web-based user interface (MMI)?

A: Open any of the above browsers. Enter http:/192.168.128.100 in the URL field.

Q: Can I access the user interface (MMI) with proxy enabled?

A: No. In order to access the MMI from the browser, ensure that proxy settings in your browser are disabled. You may need to enable this setting to return to other Internet connections.

Q: How do I disable the proxy?

A:You must verify that the proxy server settings in your browser are disabled.

For Microsoft Internet Explorer, select Tools, then Internet Options, Connections and LAN Settings, and uncheck the box labeled ‘Use a proxy server for your LAN’.

For Netscape or Firefox, go to Advanced Preferences and select ‘Direct connection to the Internet’.

For Safari, select System Preferences, Network, Built-in Ethernet/Proxies and uncheck the box labeled ‘Web Proxy (HTTP).’
When complete, please close your browser.

Don’t forget, you may need to recheck this box to return to your other internet connection.

Q: What is the battery duration when the terminal is used continuously?

A: One hour when continuously transmitting at maximum speed.

Q: What is the stand-by time for the battery?

A: 24 hours
