MSUA Announces 2014 Pioneer and Innovation Award Winners
MSUA Awards Presentation to take place Tuesday, March 11 at upcoming conference
Rockville, Md. – Wednesday, February 26, 2014 - The Mobile Satellite Users Association (MSUA) today announced the winners of its 2014 Awards, with the Pioneer Award made to Mr. Daniel Lévesque, former head of the Cospas-Sarsat Secretariat, for his lasting contributions in key leadership roles in the Cospas-Sarsat Program and the Innovation Award made to Thuraya Telecommunications Company for its SatSleeve product, the world's first satellite adaptor for the smartphone.
Commenting on the awards, MSUA President Tim Farrar noted “We are pleased to present the Innovation Award to Thuraya Telecommunications Company for the Thuraya SatSleeve which provides access to satellite mobile communication services to iPhone and Android phones. We are also honored to recognize Mr. Daniel Lévesque as recipient of this year’s Pioneer Award. Mr. Lévesque not only served as the chief executive of Cospas-Sarsat for nearly a quarter of a century but his outstanding leadership and technical skills have guided the program from its early days depending only on analogue beacons operating through low earth orbiting satellites to the present. Cospas-Sarsat is credited with being the vital alert and location-determination link for helping to rescue more than 35,000 persons over more than three decades.”
Thuraya’s Chief Executive Officer, Samer Halawi said: “Innovation is a key driver of our strategy and to opening up new markets and we were delighted to launch the Thuraya SatSleeve last year. A game-changing industry first, the SatSleeve pioneers the concept of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) to the satellite world. The SatSleeve transforms iPhones and Android phones into satellite smartphones with full walk-and-talk voice and data capabilities. We are very proud to be recognized by the MSUA for this great honor. Reaction to the SatSleeve has been very positive and points to untapped potential which exists around the convergence of terrestrial and satellite technologies, an area where Thuraya is uniquely well-positioned.”
The MSUA-11 Conference is being held in conjunction with the SATELLITE 2014 Conference and Exhibition, the premier event providing solutions to the satellite end-user community, and includes a luncheon on Tuesday, March 11, at which the awards will be presented. MSUA-11 and SATELLITE 2014 will be held from March 10-13, 2014 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C.
The eleventh international Mobile Satellite Users Conference and Exhibition, MSUA-11, provides a unique opportunity for users and providers of mobile satellite communications.
